Dear friends,
It is with the greatest sorrow that we announce the very recent and unexpected death of our dear friend and colleague Gordon Summerbell.
Gordon was for a number of years the Friends’ Treasurer, and has more recently continued as our Assistant Treasurer, but his association with the Cathedral is far, far longer than that. More than seventy years ago, indeed, Gordon was a Cathedral Chorister, and his devotion to the Cathedral has never waned in all the decades since.

His gentle manner, his humour and his kindness were lifelong special qualities, and many members of the Friends will have got to know him, whether as a Senior Steward and Guide in the Cathedral or simply as a remarkable fount of information. It is hard to express how much we shall miss his regular visits, not to mention his ability to remember exactly which projects the Friends have supported over the years, along with where, when and who was involved.
We have now set up a donations page for those who would like to donate to The Friends of Durham Cathedral in Gordon’s memory.
Please may we invite you to pray for Gordon, for his wife Ros and their family and for their very many friends.
With our best wishes, and with many fond memories,
Caroline Peacock and all the Friends of Durham Cathedral
Gordon's funeral will be on Monday 31 March, 14:15 at Durham Cathedral.
