Royal Maundy Service

April was a busy month in the Friends’ Office, the building was a-buzz with preparations of the Royal Maundy Service and what a day that was! It was such an honour and a special moment for us to be in Durham Cathedral in the presence of The King and Queen.
It was touching to witness, and meet, the men and women who received the Maundy Money. The Maundy Money was presented to them by The King to thank them for the dedication of Christian service and their work in their local community.
It was wonderful to see the hard work and dedication of Durham Cathedral’s own staff and volunteers working together to create a seamless event. Lots of hard work, but gosh what an honour that will stay in Durham Cathedral history and our memories for years to come!
The Lieutenancy Chairs
Those that were able to attend the Royal Maundy Service will have noticed the new Lieutenancy Chairs.
The chairs were commissioned from premier church furniture designer Luke Hughes and are in memory of Denis Trigg, who was Clerk of Works, before becoming the cathedral's first Chapter Steward and a long-standing member of the cathedral community.

Denis was a long standing member of the Friends and a collection was raised in his memory when he passed away. His wife, Val, has been working with us and the cathedral on a memorial project and we know that Denis would have been delighted to know that the chairs were officially used by the King and Queen for the Royal Maundy Service!

In the future, the Lord Lieutenant or one her Deputies will use the chairs when representing The King at special services and events at Durham Cathedral.
