Our Friends Lecture Series returns on 23rd September for the first of three specialised talks for you to enjoy.

Join us on 23rd September for  "Creating Georgian churches in northern England 1700-1830" by Richard Pears

The alterations to Durham Cathedral in the 1790s by the architect James Wyatt were designed to create a structure fitting to the religious services of the eighteenth-century Anglican Church. Across the northern counties, medieval parish churches were remodelled in a similar vein and new churches constructed in the style of Roman temples. Much of this work was replaced by the re-medievalising of Anglican churches from the 1830s following the changes promoted by the Oxford Movement and architects including A.W.N. Pugin. In this illustrated talk, Richard Pears will examine this lost phase in the history of English churches.

Richard Pears is Faculty Librarian for Art and Humanities at Durham University Library and Collection and a published  author.

Marie-Thérèse is the Exhibitions and Collections Officer at Durham Cathedral and is a very evocative speaker. In this talk she explores the many types of angels that can be seen in art and sculpture. Find out about the different roles they perform, their heavenly duties, and where you can find some of them in and around the Cathedral.
