We had an overwhelming amount of interest in our proposed Harrison & Harrison Organ Factory Visit and we were delighted that they were able to open their doors to show not one but TWO groups of our Friends around the organ factory. Both dates were full and we welcomed members from Cheshire and Scotland who travelled especially to join us.
Coincidently our visit took place while a new organ was being built so our members were privy to the rare sight of a new organ under construction The fascinating tour led us through Harrison & Harrison workshops to observe the skilled craftsmanship behind their renowned organ building and restoration work.

Donation were to their given charity ‘Blood Bikes’ which supports profession rapid response medical transport for the NHS.
We then walked a short distance down to St Johns Church at Meadowfield where Father Carl opened the church for us to admire their Harrison and Harrison Organ. The church has kindly allowed us the use of their kitchen, so we all enjoyed a much needed cuppa and some delicious flapjack.

Members who came on the Thursday tour were treated to an impromptu performance from our Treasurer Andrew which lead to more of our organ playing members to join in and instructions and lessons given!

Fun Fact: The Durham Cathedral organ was originally built in 1876 commissioned from Henry ’Father’ Willis and later rebuilt and revoiced by Harrison and Harrison in 1903. Their new factory is now based at Meadowfield Industrial Estate and continues to supply and restore organs to churches and cathedrals both home and abroad.
Don’t worry if you missed out this time as we do intend to offer arrange another event at Harrison and Harrison.
Thank you to Kevin for his excellent photos from the day too!
